Everything you need

Let's start with the basics: water, sewer, garbage pickup, telephone, electricity ... you get the idea. Velva boasts some of the best utilities you'll find anywhere: from necessities like our fresh spring water to amenities like cable television and DSL internet.

The City of Velva handles our water, sewer and weekly garbage pickup, all in one billing and all at prices you won't believe: the monthly bill for these three services averages only about $35! Homes in Velva are heated in a variety of ways, including propane, electric and fuel oil. Refills for all of these furnaces are available right in Velva, delivered directly to your door.

Electricity is provided to Velva proper by Ottertail Power, an investor-owned utility that provides power to 465 communities in three states. The outlying area, including the Industrial Park, is serviced by Verendrye Electric Cooperative (VEC), a rural electric cooperative serving 7,450 member consumers and headquartered in Velva. Verendrye's service area covers 5,000 square miles and includes not only the rural area, but the Minot Air Force Base and the developing area around Minot.

Telephone and DSL internet service in Velva proper is provided by North Dakota Telephone Company (NDTC), another customer-owned cooperative. Yet another -- Souris River Telephone (SRT) -- serves the outlying area, and also provides digital Personal Communication Service (PCS) telephone service and internet. In addition, this progressive company is moving into wireless technology. The popular cell phone and long distance companies are all here, as well, so pick your favorite. You may be out in the country in Velva, but you're never out of touch!
