Taking care of a community

It takes more than hired hands to keep a community thriving. Here in Velva, there are numerous civic groups and organizations geared to address a variety of areas. They encompass all age groups and interests, so you're sure to find something you like!

  • Velva Woman's Club: This group has a long history in Velva, dating back more than 75 years. (Eric Sevareid's mother was one of this group's founders!) These ladies focus on community betterment and the improvement and maintainence of our outstanding public library.
  • Velva Golf Club: Currently, this ambitious organization is in the midst of building a new executive golf course just north of Velva. The fully irrigated greens and fairways were seeded in 2002 and members expect to tee off in the summer of 2003. Fundraisers are currently underway to finance a fine new clubhouse.
  • Community Youth Project (CYP): A group of parents and interested individuals who sponsor alcohol-free post prom and graduation parties. Membership is open to all and helping hands are always welcome!
  • Velva Lions: Part of a nationwide membership, this civic organization works for the betterment of our community and our nation.
  • Dakota Roughriders Saddle Club: These folks love to ride horse and their primary goal is to share that passion. From raising the funds to build Velva's now-completed rodeo arena to sponsoring fun nights for the family and a big 4th of July rodeo, if you like to ride -- or would like to learn how -- these are the people to see.
  • Ghostriders Snowmobile Club: In a good winter, we have an abundance of snow and these sledders have discovered a great way to enjoy our winter wonderland. Members have also built a new snowmobile trail around the city, which connects with a regional and statewide system of groomed trails.
  • Association of Commerce: Local business people band together to improve our community in various ways.
  • Velva Community Development Corporation (VCDC): These folks are instrumental in Velva's successful track record in economic development. From tackling the recent housing shortage to helping finance the purchase of the local drug store, members work hard to maintain and expand current businesses while looking for new opportunities.
  • Aggie Booster Club (ABC): Sports are a big part of our community life, and with Velva's winning tradition, it's easy to understand why. This organization works to fund the athletic programs by sponsoring different activities, including tailgating parties.
  • Dollars for Scholars (DFS): In Velva, we take care of all our students. DFS is a national network of community-based organizations aimed at providing scholarship money to local graduates. It is the goal of the Velva Area Dollars for Scholars to provide each Velva high school graduate with money for college.
  • Joseph I. Weller American Legion Post and Auxiliary: Membership is limited to veterans and their families. The Legion and Auxiliary contribute greatly to the community and sponsor local high school students at Girls and Boys State, as well as the local American Legion baseball team. Weekly bingo is held every Saturday night at the Legion Hall, which is also available for rent.
  • Velva In Progress (VIP): This independent organization serves our community well. One of its primary projects is a huge Halloween bash for youngsters held every year.
  • Star City Senior Citizens: Velva's senior residents have their own center on Main Street. An active group, they participate in a variety of activities like meal programs, bus services, parties, dances and card games.
  • Homemakers Clubs: There are several of these organizations in the area, offering a chance to socialize and learn new skills.
  • Youth groups: Velva has numerous special interest groups for youngsters and teenagers, most of them based through the school. Outside the school, there are Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, an outdoors group, church youth organizations and volunteer services.
  • Local Churches: Our area churches offer adult classes, Sunday school, youth groups, Bible Study and social activities.
