Just a hop, skip and a jump away...

While small town life is great and most of your necessities -- and many amenities -- can be found right here in Velva, there are times you need more. Well, that's no problem: the city of Minot is less than 30 minutes west of town with everything you could possibly need. A community of more than 35,000, Minot offers the beautiful Roosevelt Park and Zoo, multiplex movie theaters, miniature golf, go-carts, ethnic dining, dancing, concerts, symphony orchestra, and semi-pro sports teams.

Another spectacular attraction that springs from our Norse anscestory is the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot. This outdoor museum features a centuries-old stabbur, imported from Norway, along with an ancient Scandinavian church and additional ethnic buildings. There is a winding stream through the park and lush gardens, and the beautiful Heritage Center that anchors the grounds offers indoor historical displays and information and serves as a consumer outlet for the Høstfest.

Lake Sakakawea, the largest man-made lake in the world, offers recreational water opportunities too numerous to mention here. In addition, there are numerous smaller lakes dotting the countryside around Velva, offering opportunities for fishing, skiing, swimming and boating.

The International Peace Garden is two hours north of Velva and is truly a sight to behold. This botanical delight features 2,300 acres of flowers and landscaping and summer camps for youngsters and adults. The camps cover everything from music and drama to cheerleading, taught by premiere instructors from around the globe. Who could help but be inspired surrounded by such beauty? And soon, the Peace Garden will be the site of the a Memorial Cairn, dedicated to the memory of September 11th and partially constructed of steel from the World Trade Center. This solemn monument is currently under construction and will be located next to the Peace Chapel.
